DESIGNER OF THE WEEK – CHRISTIAN DIOR

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK – CHRISTIAN DIOR!

Christian Dior was a French designer that revolutionized the fashion industry.

Born in Granville, France in 1905, to a wealthy family, Dior’s interest in art began early. On the path of becoming an architect or diplomat, Dior, listened to his gut, and convinced his father to buy him an art gallery. After 3 years, the gallery closed, due to the Great Depression, and his father losing his fortune. To make money, Dior began doing fashion sketches, and shortly afterwards found himself working for the great fashion designer Robert Piguet. Piguet gave Dior the opportunity to design three (3) collections. Dior would later say ‘Robert Piguet taught me the virtues of simplicity through which true elegance must come.’

While at Piguet, Dior worked alongside Pierre Balmain. Dior left Piguet, when he was called for military duty.

In 1946, with the backing of Marcel Boussac, one of the wealthiest men in France, the Dior fashion house was founded. Dior changed the attitude of France, because at a time when fabric was being rationed out, post war, Dior’s designs were extravagant and called for long yards of fabric.  ‘Dior’s designs were more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations of fabric,’ says editor-n-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, Carmel Snow.  The ‘New Look’ revolutionized women’s dress and reestablished Paris as the centre of the fashion world after World War II.

A young Yves Saint Lauren came to work for Dior. Prior to Dior’s passing, he made Yves the head designer.

At the time of Dior’s death, his fashion house was earning more than $20 million annually.

Dior ..…

  • Revolutionized the fashion industry, post war, with his New Look
  • Start a global fashion industry
  • 1st to license his name to complete a full look (shoes, gloves, hat, etc)
  • 1st fashion designer featured on the cover of TIME Magazine

Today, Dior is owned by Bernard Arnault, who also heads LVMH, the world’s largest luxury group. Dior itself holds 42.36% shares of and 59.01% voting rights within LVMH. Sidney Toledano has been the CEO since 1997.
